Tips for Working with the CCSD School Bus System

Parents in the Las Vegas valley have some confusion about our local school bus system. I hope that my information below will help clear up any confusion.

Question:  How do I know if my child is eligible for bus transportation?

Answer: Go to the school district transportation website, enter in your address, and it will tell you if your zoned schools are transportation eligible.

After your information has been entered the computer will tell you what schools for your neighborhood have bus transportation available.

The district site will tell you which schools are eligible for transportation:

Specific stop locations are not listed on this website.

Question:  How do I register for bus transportation?

Answer:  A transportation form has been included in registration packets for each school year. If you do not recall completing such a form, or you did not use bus transportation in the past you will be best served to register for service this year.

~

Question: What is my student’s ID number?

Answer: This is a six or seven digit number that appears on all of the school correspondence including grade reports and newsletters. If you have a Parentlink account activated you can find your child’s ID number from the detail screen about your student.  The transportation department will not give you this number over the phone.  Your child’s school may give you the number with proper ID with many offices not able to give it out over the phone.

Question: What about buses for magnet schools?

Answer:  When you register for magnet school the transportation form is included.  You can access your student’s bus information through the website using their id number.

~

Question: My child is in special education are those buses also handled by this department?

Answer:  Special education buses are handled by the transportation department. These bus drivers and assistants see only the page of your child’s IEP regarding transportation outlining what services the student specifically needs to be transported to and from school.

~

Question: When are bus notices mailed to my home?

Answer: I have been told that bus notices will be mailed and put on ParentLink no later than August 15th.

~

Question: How am I notified about changes to the bus stop or schedule?

Answer: Your student will receive a new print out from the driver.  Since my kids seem to lose theirs I also keep a close eye on the ParentLink website. I am emailed every time a new message is waiting for me on ParentLink so I can login and see what I need to know. The bus notices are frequent the first few weeks of school.

~

Question: What about the activity buses?

Answer: These are buses at select schools that transport your student 1-2 hours after the end of the school day so that they can have access to after school programs. The details about each of these programs you will need to get from your school.  These buses run depending on how many students decided to participate in activities so it may be a shorter or longer bus ride for your child at the end of the day.

~

Question: What time should I arrive to the bus stop?

Answer: You should arrive at least 15 minutes early to the bus stop on the first day, and expect that the bus may be as much as 1 hour late. On normal days after the first week of school buses run for the most part on time.

~

Question: When should I call the transportation department over a late bus?

Answer: This depends on the age of your child. For my youngest children I call when the bus is 30 minutes or more late. My older kids I call if the bus is more than an hour late. Keep the phone number to the transportation department programmed on your cell phone  799-8111. Also if your student is on a bus after 5pm when the transportation phone lines close you will need to get the number for the local station the buses leave from for your area so that you can speak to that local dispatcher after the main hotline closes. For magnet school students one snag along the way and the bus may be out as late as 7. In an emergency you can always call the school police 799-5411 for assistance if your child is extremely late.

~

Question: What happens when a school bus breaks down or gets in an accident?

Answer: CCSD does a great job of keeping parents informed in the event of a break down or accident. Our family has had two experiences over the last 5 years once a tire blew out on the way home from school and before my son’s bus was even late the transportation office called me with a new time that he would arrive. My son reported that no fewer than 6 people all showed up to get the bus back on the road. My daughter’s bus had an accident where a piece of debris flew out of a truck onto the bus cracking a window. The driver being very cautious for the students safety stopped the bus and a new bus was sent to pick up the kids. Again, the transportation department called to tell me even before the bus was late.

~

Question: What happens if my child gets on the wrong bus?

Answer: The first weeks of school the staff is vigilant to ensure that all students are tagged with their names and stop information. My daughter’s school used colored bracelets. This worked well until she and her friend decided to switch colors and she took the wrong bus because her name tag and bracelet had not been matched. So she rode on a bus to a different neighborhood and was the last kid on the bus when the driver found out. Again, transportation called me so I would not have to worry. This incident was taken very seriously and my daughter was returned to our stop by a supervisor.  So please remind your children that the color coded necklaces and bracelets the schools pass out are for safety, not as fashion accessories.

~

Question: What about discipline on the bus?

Answer: The first and foremost job of the bus driver is student safety. Drivers cannot do their jobs distracted by unruly children. Their job is to drive the bus, not break up fights. Most annoying I have heard from bus drivers are parents who expect them to keep track of petty she-said-this she-said-that fights on the bus. First of the bus is so loud the driver cannot hear what smack talk is happening at the back of the bus no better than you can hear what your own kids are saying in the backseat of the minivan with the stereo on. Now just imagine that by 30 plus screaming kids! Just like you the bus driver does not have eyes on the back of their head to see if anything gets stolen or snatched.

All the driver can do is write up a referral (delaying the bus for everyone) and have the school administrators handle it. This again is an exercise in futility because of course by two days after the event has happened kids deny that they did anything wrong. Riding the bus in many ways is a at-your-own-risk proposition if your child is a target of bullies. The only solution at hand is to have your child ride in the very front seat alone.

However if your child is disabled on an IEP you can request a transfer to special education busing to your neighborhood school if the environment on the bus interferes with his or her ability to learn at school.

Go over the top ten basic bus safety rules with your children.

As with the rest of the school environment have your children keep their expensive electronic toys off of the bus. For my kids we purchased cheap $10 MP3 players at BigLots for the ride to and from school so in case it gets lost it is not the crisis that comes with losing a more expensive device. Tell your kids to keep their cell phones inside their backpack at all times. Again, we give our kids the cheapest phone possible prepaid with only a few minutes so that if it is lost it is not a financial crisis resulting in charges to our real cell phone account. One lost cell phone within minutes can charge hundreds to your bill in malicious purchases if your account is not adequately protected. Kids may take days to tell you they have lost their phone.~Have a great school year. Remember that your child’s bus driver is only human, and that safety and courtesy are everyone’s job from parents to drivers and administrators too. Let’s have a great 2011-2012 school year!

Field Trip Grants up to $700 for Local Schools – ACT NOW September 30 Deadline!

I know this does not cover the full cost of a field trip but this money could make a HUGE difference to classroom as to if they get to participate.

Think Outside the Classroom Grants

As with any grant application keep it simple. Help your classroom teacher by doing the application and gathering the basic information.

Things such as bus costs change drastically each year. If your district gives a base allotment for educational transportation per classroom (I don’t believe CCSD does this in the 2011-2012 budget) do not include bus transportation in the budget and instead focus on admission.

When you obtain admission prices make sure to ask for the classroom field trip rate and for the number of chaperons the  venue requires per group of students in your class age group.

Go online, create an account and get the application with the information you will need to submit to Target. These grants can take MONTHS to process. Start now for a spring class field trip.

You will also need to fully document all of the expenses and submit back to Target the completed workbook of when the trip was taken and how the money was spent. Sounds to me like an opportunity to get one of those coveted chaperon seats!

Act now- the deadline is September 30th!

Field Trip programs taking place between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012, notifications will be send by January 1, 2012.

This is shown on the FAQ page.

Field trip locations can check out this program which offers links to encourage groups to apply for grants to visit their location. I would love to see more small local locations such as Gilcrease Nature Sancturary, Tule Springs, and the libraries benefit from these grants.

Congratulations to the local Las Vegas Schools who Received this Grant Last Year!

CCSD’s ParentLink Helps You Set Your Older Students Up to Receive Text Messages About Their Grades

One thing I won’t accept from my kids is that they did not know about missing homework or a bad grade. I have another tool at my disposal too – grade update messages sent directly to their phone EVERY time a grade is updated by their teachers. (I get it sent to my phone too.)

Login to Parentlink the pattern I found for the login number is your child’s student ID# – with a G in the front and either a 1 or 2 after it for each parent who has an account for the students.

On the top right hand side of the banner after you have successfully logged in click on MY ACCOUNT.

From there you are given the option to add new information to your student’s profile.

As you can see I have added a lot of contact information. My kids information is shared with their cell phones, my cell phone, my husband’s cell phone, and even their grandparents.

On the right hand corner beneath all of the contacts – click add.

Then complete the form below. Make sure you send a test when you do it so that you can see it goes through to their phones. As you can see you can set up to hear messages about only one school. This way my son does not have to read messages about his sister’s school work and vice versa.

If your children are set up on multiple different logins for Parentlink make sure to hit the MERGE ACCOUNTS button on the bottom left side of the screen to combine their accounts into one screen.

Another great tool Parentlink offers is easy viewing from your smart phone from anywhere by going to ParentLink.CCSD.Net from your phone which will re-direct you to the mobile version of the site. It downloads so quickly you can tell before you get to the check out line if everyone has turned in their homework!

Back to School – Back to Vote!

As parents it is our job to model good citizenship. Of all the things I do to demonstrate this value to my children I consider voting among the most important.  Our family watches both the local and national news together which we use to discuss the important issues of the upcoming elections.

In Clark County Nevada it is easy to check and make sure you are registered to vote.

Go to Clark County Election services website.  This page has a form that asks for your name and date of birth. If you have married since your last voter registration check under your maiden name as well.

If your name appears on the registration, but you need to change information such as your address simply click on the change address text link next to the incorrect address and fix it online. This creates a form you will need to sign and mail into the elections department. You can also change your party affiliation online which will complete a new application for you which must also be signed and mailed in.

You can view your election districts and take note of the list of close to 100 different elected officials serving in our community. Not every seat runs every year. It is important to know who is representing your family from the president on down to the county public administrator and local judges.

For our school district trustees are elected to four year terms based on geographic regions. Every parent should be watching the trustee elections to learn about both our district and who is best qualified to lead in our challenging region. Read the official Board of Trustees brochure for 2011-2012.  If you can invite your trustee to events your school or community organization has so that they can learn more about what matters to local families.

If you have never voted in Nevada but have a state issued drivers license registering to vote can be done quickly online.  Today when I checked this service was temporarily suspended due to the voter registration deadline for a special election. It should be back up.

We still have the other services available!

If you have a printer you can print out the PDF from the Secretary of State website and mail it in! This form automatically completes based on the information you fill in. Just sign it and mail it!

Complete and print the voter registration form from the Secretary of State office online, then place it in the mail!

If you do not have a printer go to the county website and request that an application be mailed to your home.

You can also use the national voter registration form – print, sign, and mail in.

Other places to pick up a voter registration form in Las Vegas:

  • Post Office
  • Elected Official Offices
  • Library
The number one place I would love to see voter registration cards is in all school offices!

These are the common myths about voting in our community:
~
Myth #1
If I register to vote then I will have to serve jury duty, my family cannot afford for me to miss work or have someone else take care of my children so I can serve on a jury.
FACT
The jury pool in Clark County in selected from drivers license and ID card holders.  ( Source Clark County Nevada Juror FAQ )
~
Myth #2
My home will be called non-stop during the election cycle and there will be people at my door every hour harassing me for my vote.
FACT
Candidates do want to get the word out about their campaigns. You can choose to make your registration confidential this means that no campaign will receive your phone number to call during an election. Even if you are already registered to vote you can still go online and shield your personal information.
~
Myth #3
I don’t have time to vote.
FACT
In our community several opportunities exist in every election to vote early, vote by mail, or vote on election day in your own neighborhood. Early voting takes place in every section of the valley on a pre-published schedule in locations as easy to get to as your local supermarket. Many of us even vote on election day at our child’s school.  If you have to take your child to vote with you there are always chairs they can sit on to quietly wait under the watchful eye of poll workers. When I have voted with a very small baby as long as I did not disturb other voters that was OK. Bring a friend and switch off voting while watching each others kids or drag your spouse down to vote.

Voting is not only our right – it is our responsibility.

FREE Inspirational Posters DVD for Teachers and Non Profits

A couple of years ago I ordered these posters for a group I was volunteering to help with after school. The kids loved the posters. One was Einstein, the next was a girl who had lost her leg to a shark, and the third was about confidence.

This offer is still out there if you are a teacher or from a volunteer organization that works with education you too can order a FREE set of three posters and a DVD with the same inspirational commercials as you see on TV.

As a parent I have spent the morning printing out from their downloads page some motivational posters to re-decorate around the areas where my kids get ready for school.

Information from the provider website:

The Foundation for a Better Life began as a simple idea to promote positive values. We believe that people are basically good and just need a reminder. And that the values we live by are worth more when we pass them on.

Packages sent to U.S. addresses will include a set of three posters and a DVD containing our TV spots. For addresses outside the U.S., we can only include a DVD that contains our TV Spots. We encourage those who are outside of the U.S. to download and print your own copies of our billboards from our downloads page.

I’m not a school, can I still get posters?

Yes, we do sometimes send posters to hospitals, non-profits or other organizations that work in an educational capacity.

School Crossing Guard Jobs Throughout Our Community

With some help from my twitter friends I learned where to find the applications for school crossing guards.

School crossing guards are needed throughout our community to cross children to and from school. If your children are older and you need a few extra dollars this is a great job. Get your applications in NOW so that our town will have the adults they need to ensure a safe walk to school!

Back to School Fairs at the Malls and with City Council

This year back to school fairs will once again return to the local malls. There is not a lot of information available about what services will be available. Click here to read all CCSD had to say about it.  I do find it interesting that for our public schools back to school fair a co-sponsor is corporate run and operated virtual school Nevada Virtual Academy K12.   While my own child did have success in K12 for a year before he decided he wanted to be in public school again, the commitment to do virtual school has a huge impact on a family. It is certainly not a decision to be taken lightly.

Kids Jeans Sale $1 a Pair Special at Childrens Orchard in Las Vegas

Here is a great deal happening this weekend at Children’s Orchard a shop that sells high quality gently used baby and kids clothes. Each household can pick up one pair of jeans for $1! Even at full price designer jeans that are at least $30 in the store go for $6. I joined their e-club after finding this store to be a great place to shop for my middle school daughter. While the clothes look new – sometimes even still have tags attached – I save a ton of money.

You can also make some money toward the back to school purchases you need by dropping off to sell your high quality used items. Those items that do not meet the resale requirements can be donated by Children’s Orchard to a charity on your behalf. My kids grow so fast sometimes we have clothes they have only worn once before it is already too small!

So check out this ad for Children’s Orchard for this weekend or stop by and check them out to save some back to school $$$$$.

Age and Immunization Requirements for Kindergarten 2011-2012

These are the official kindergarten requirements for the 2011-2012 school year:

  • To enroll in kindergarten, state law requires children to be 5 years old by September 30.
  • To enroll in full-day kindergarten there is an additional fee and space is limited. Deposits were required at many schools by April 1st.
  • Your child must have current immunizations
  • You must complete the official district paperwork. The best part about getting the forms online is that you can type in your answers. If you have multiple children in the same family save a lot of time by simply completing the form, then changing out for child’s name and birth date information.
~
Use the school district website to locate your neighborhood school and pick up all of the necessary forms before heading down to your school. Many school offices are closed the month of July so you will want to call ahead for summer hours.
